There is a man I had known for four years, liked enormously, and never once seen outside the thing we both went to.

That is an extremely common shape and it is the one worth attacking, because the hard part is already done. You have found someone you get on with. What is missing is a single move, and the move has a fixed cost of about nine seconds.

What the conversion actually is

Moving a man from acquaintance to friend means generating contact that the structure did not generate.

That is the entire definition. Right now every meeting between you exists because a third thing put you both in the same room. A friendship is what you have when at least some of the contact comes from one of you instead.

So there is exactly one thing to do: create one instance of contact outside the container. Everything else follows from that, and nothing at all follows without it.

The ask

Here is the wording. It has three properties and each is doing work.

I'm heading up to [specific place] on Saturday, want to come along? Back by four.

A specific time. "We should catch up sometime" fails because it hands the organising to nobody, and both of you are out of practice at organising. A dated proposal costs the other man one decision instead of a project.

A specific thing. The activity supplies the reason, which is what stops an unexplained request for a man's time reading as a signal that something is wrong. I once invited a bloke for a coffee with no occasion and he texted four hours later asking if everything was alright. That is the standard response, and it is why the reason matters. I have written about that habit and where it comes from.

An easy exit. "Back by four" lets him decline on logistics rather than on you, which keeps a no cheap for both of you. A no that costs nothing can be followed by a yes next time.

What to leave out: any explanation of why you are asking, any reference to how long it has been, any apology. All three make the other man responsible for managing your feelings about the ask, which is work you are trying not to request.

Choose the format for dead time

The activity is not where the friendship gets built. The unoccupied minutes attached to it are.

I played five-a-side for nine years - arrive, play, shower, leave, almost no surplus - and finished with four good acquaintances and nobody I would have rung with real news. Then I drove one of them four hours to a game and learned more in a day than in the previous nine years.

So pick formats with gaps in them. Long drives, fishing, a repair job needing two people, a walk, golf, anything on a boat, ferrying kids to a distant fixture. Avoid cinemas, gigs, anything loud, and any sport that ends the moment it ends.

One more thing that sounds trivial and is not: facing forwards helps. Nearly every real conversation I have had with a man in two years happened while we were both pointed at a road or a fire rather than at each other.

Repetition before depth

The second law, and the one men get backwards.

Six short contacts beat one long evening. A single brilliant day out usually produces nothing, because there is no second instance and neither of you will make one. A fairly dull fortnightly arrangement produces a friendship inside a year.

So the target is not a great occasion. It is a standing arrangement: every second Tuesday, the first Saturday of the month, whatever. The moment a thing has its own schedule, nobody has to make the awkward ask again. You pay the nine seconds once.

The failure rate, stated honestly

About one in four of my overtures went anywhere.

That number is the most useful thing in this article. Men who do not know it make two attempts, get two polite non-answers, and conclude that they are the problem. They are not. Three quarters is the normal rate, and it has very little to do with you - men are busy, out of practice, and frequently assume the invitation is a formality.

Expect to make five asks to get one thing that repeats. Budget for that in advance and the failures stop meaning anything.

When it does get strange

Three ways it can go wrong, and what they actually are.

He says yes and it is stilted. Almost always the format, not the friendship. You picked something with no dead time, or something facing each other. Try again in a car.

He does not reply. Let it go and do not send a follow-up asking whether he got it. Most non-replies are not decisions. Try once more in two months with a different specific thing, and if that also goes nowhere, spend your effort elsewhere. Two is the right number of attempts.

You are always the one asking. This is normal for about a year and it is the price of starting from zero. It does reverse. The day a man I had invited eleven times invited me to something, I noticed properly.

The one thing that is not in the manuals

At some point someone has to say something slightly unperformed in the dead time. Not a confession. Just a sentence that is not logistics, work or sport.

It will probably have to be you, because you are the one who wants this. In my experience it lands far better than expected, gets a brief and slightly embarrassed reply, and is never mentioned again. That is not a failure - that is the register working exactly as it works, and the friendship is different afterwards even though neither of you will acknowledge it.

This week

Pick one man you already like. One specific ask, with a date, a thing and an exit, in a format with dead time. Then four more, and expect one.

If you want the full ordering - dormant contacts first, acquaintances second, strangers last - the honest guide is here. And if you are not certain which of your relationships are already friendships, the distinction is here.
