Making friends

Making friends as a man in midlife is a deliberate process, not a social accident. It runs in one order: restart the contacts you already have, convert the acquaintances you already see, and only then go looking for strangers. It is slow, it is awkward, and most attempts go nowhere. That is normal.

The first message I sent was to a man I had worked with for six years and had not spoken to in four. It took me two days to write eleven words, and when I read them back they sounded like a work email. I sent them anyway. He replied in about an hour. It then took two months to get a beer into a diary, which I have since learned is roughly the going rate.

Nobody teaches men the second half of this. At 22 the friendships were made for us by proximity: the same course, the same house, the same team, the same shift. Turning an acquaintance into a friend required nothing except turning up repeatedly in the same room. At 48 there is no room. You have to build the reason to be there, propose it out loud, and be the one who proposes it again when nobody else does.

Most of what is written about men friendship explains why it collapses and stops there. The awkwardness of building it back is real and I am not going to tell you it is not. Roughly three attempts in four go nowhere, and the ones that work do not announce themselves at the time. What makes it survivable is knowing the order of operations and not measuring yourself against a hit rate that does not exist.

The writing below is the practical half of this site: the dormant contact, the first message, the purpose problem, activity-based friendship, and what to do when a career change or a move takes the whole set out at once.

If you want the method in one place, First Round is the field guide and journal - how to build adult friendships from scratch at fifty, in the order that works rather than the order men try. Reach is for afterwards, when you know exactly who you should contact and still do not send the message.
